Why a handwoven checkerboard looks different

A checkerboard woven by hand is never perfectly regular. Squares drift a little in size, lines lean, and the edges between colors stay soft in the wool. That slight irregularity is what separates a handwoven grid from a printed one, and it is why a checkered Moroccan rug looks calm rather than graphic once it is on the floor.

Choosing a checkerboard by color

  • Black and ivory gives the strongest contrast. It anchors a light room and works with wood, leather and white walls. See all our black and white rugs.
  • Beige and ivory keeps the pattern but lowers the contrast, for bedrooms and quiet living rooms. See our neutral rugs.
  • Olive, indigo, red and sage bring color while the grid keeps it orderly. See our green rugs and Boujaad rugs.

Scale and size

A large grid reads best on a large rug: under a sofa group or a dining table, the squares stay visible around the furniture. In a hallway, a checkerboard runner draws the eye along the length of the corridor; see our runner rugs and the hallway runner guide.

Each rug is woven to order in the width and length you enter on the product page, which shows the price and the estimated delivery for that size. Made to order rugs take 2 to 10 weeks to weave, depending on size, then 3 to 5 business days to reach the United States. Shipping is free worldwide, with import duties and taxes included.
