What is a Moroccan kilim?

A kilim is a flatwoven rug: the pattern is woven into the fabric, with no knotted pile standing up from it. Zanafi rugs are Moroccan kilims. If you are looking for a Moroccan kilim rug, these are the pieces on this page; for a thick, soft rug with pile, look at our Beni Ourain style rugs instead.

About Zanafi flatweave rugs

A Zanafi rug is woven flat: it has no pile. The pattern comes from the weave itself, in fine stripes, outlined diamonds, dotted bands and braided fringe. A flatweave sits low on the floor, so doors pass over it and its edges are less of a trip point, and it has no pile to flatten along the walking line.

Where a flatweave works best

For softness underfoot in a living room or a bedroom, a pile rug such as our Beni Ourain style rugs is the better choice.
