Sahrawi Majlis and Moroccan Floor Seating

What is a Sahrawi majlis?

A Sahrawi majlis is a low seating area that runs along the walls of a room: firm floor mattresses with back cushions against the wall and armrest bolsters at the ends. In the Sahrawi tradition of southern Morocco it is the living room of a home or a tent, with guests facing each other and a low table or tea tray in the middle. It seats more people than a sofa in the same space.

Choose your floor seating

• A majlis made for your room: choose a straight, L, U or full-room layout, type the length of each wall, and the designer places the seats, back cushions and armrests, shows the plan in 3D and gives the price. Each seat is 70 cm (27.5 in) deep and 15 cm (6 in) high.
• Complete floor sofa sets, ready to use: a seat, back cushions, an armrest, floor cushions and a matching rug.
• A reading floor chair for one, 95 x 70 x 10 cm, filled with high-density foam.
• Folding outing seats and a picnic majlis set for six that fits in a car trunk.

Planning the room

Measure each wall you want to seat at floor level, note the doorway, and remember that each seated wall takes 70 cm (27.5 in) of floor. In a U-shape, keep about 120 cm (4 ft) or more open in the middle for a table. Add poufs and floor cushions for extra guests, and a rug for the center.
