Standard Rug Sizes: Chart in Feet and Centimeters, with Prices

The standard rectangular rug sizes in the US are 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 5 x 8, 6 x 9, 8 x 10, 9 x 12, 10 x 14 and 12 x 15 ft. Runners are usually 2 ft 6 in wide, and round rugs are sold by diameter. In centimeters, a 5 x 8 is about 152 x 244 cm and an 8 x 10 about 244 x 305 cm. European shops use their own metric sizes, such as 160 x 230 or 200 x 300 cm, which do not line up exactly with US sizes.
Below: every common size in feet and centimeters, the room each one suits, what it costs as a handmade Moroccan rug, and what to do when your room falls between two sizes.

Runner sizes
Runners come long and narrow, most often 2 ft 6 in (76 cm) wide. Leave about 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) of floor at each end of the hallway, so the hallway should be 1 to 2 ft longer than the runner.
| Runner (ft) | Runner (cm) | Hallway length | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ft 6 in x 8 ft | 76 x 244 | 9 to 10 ft | $541 |
| 2 ft 6 in x 10 ft | 76 x 305 | 11 to 12 ft | $629 |
| 2 ft 6 in x 12 ft | 76 x 366 | 13 to 14 ft | $755 |
For the width, measure the hallway at its narrowest point and leave 4 to 5 in (10 to 13 cm) of floor on each side. Our guide to choosing a hallway runner goes through widths, lengths and door clearance, and you can browse our Moroccan runner rugs.
Round rug sizes
| Diameter | Centimeters | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 ft | 152 | Entryway, reading corner | $697 |
| 6 ft | 183 | Entryway, under a round coffee table | $870 |
| 8 ft | 244 | Round table for four | $1,379 |
| 10 ft | 305 | Round table for six | $2,053 |
Under a round dining table, take the table diameter plus 4 to 5 ft (122 to 152 cm), so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. More in our round rug size guide, or see our round Moroccan rugs.
Metric rug sizes and their US equivalents
In the UK and much of Europe, rugs are sold in centimeters, and the common sizes are not conversions of US sizes. A 160 x 230 cm rug is a little wider and shorter than a 5 x 8. A 200 x 300 cm rug sits between a 6 x 9 and an 8 x 10.
| Metric size | In feet and inches | Closest US size | Our price at the exact metric size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120 x 170 cm | 3 ft 11 in x 5 ft 7 in | 4 x 6 | $547 |
| 140 x 200 cm | 4 ft 7 in x 6 ft 7 in | between 4 x 6 and 5 x 8 | $750 |
| 160 x 230 cm | 5 ft 3 in x 7 ft 7 in | 5 x 8 | $905 |
| 200 x 300 cm | 6 ft 7 in x 9 ft 10 in | between 6 x 9 and 8 x 10 | $1,386 |
| 240 x 340 cm | 7 ft 10 in x 11 ft 2 in | between 8 x 10 and 9 x 12 | $1,869 |
If you are replacing a rug bought in Europe, or following a floor plan drawn in centimeters, you do not have to round to the nearest US size: our rugs can be ordered in centimeters directly.
Which size for which room
- Living room: at least the front legs of every seat on the rug. For a three-seat sofa, usually 8 x 10 ft. For a sectional or a large room, 9 x 12 ft. See choosing a living room rug size.
- Bedroom: for a queen bed, 9 x 12 ft is the most comfortable and 8 x 10 ft the smallest that still frames the bed. A king bed needs 9 x 12 ft at least. See rug sizes under a bed.
- Dining room: the table plus 24 in (61 cm) on every side. A table for six usually needs 8 x 10 ft, a table for eight 9 x 12 ft. See dining room rug sizes.
- Entry and hallway: a 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 in an entryway, a runner in a hallway.
How to check a size before you order
- Measure the room, then the furniture group the rug has to hold.
- Mark the rug outline on the floor with painter’s tape at the size you are considering.
- Walk around it, pull out the chairs, open the doors. If anything catches or looks cramped, adjust the tape by a few inches and measure again.
The tape outline tells you more than any chart, because it shows the rug in your own room with your own furniture.
Woven to the size you need
When no standard size fits
Standard sizes exist because factories and importers stock a fixed set of sizes. A handmade rug does not have to follow them. Every TAZRIRT rug is woven to the width and length you enter on its page, in feet and inches or in centimeters, from a minimum area of 1 m² (about 10.8 sq ft). The page shows the exact price for that size, with free shipping, duties and taxes included, and the weaving time, from 2 weeks for a small rug to about 10 weeks for a very large one.
So if your room needs 7 ft 6 in x 10 ft, or 230 x 290 cm, that is the rug you can order. Our guide to ordering a custom Moroccan rug explains the steps, and the Moroccan rug cost guide shows how the price grows with the area. Or browse all Moroccan rugs.
