How Much Does a Handmade Moroccan Rug Cost?

A handmade Moroccan wool rug is priced mainly by its area, then by its style. At TAZRIRT, in October 2026, a 5 x 8 ft Beni Ourain style rug is listed at $914 and an 8 x 10 ft at $1,702, before the 30% code that currently applies to all rugs at checkout. After the code, that works out to about $15 to $16 per square foot. Shipping, import duties and taxes are included in the price.
Below: what drives the price, real examples, and how to compare offers fairly.
What you are paying for
- Weaving time. The largest part. A rug is built row by row on a loom, by hand. A bigger rug simply takes longer: on our product pages, the estimated weaving time runs from about 2 weeks for a small rug to about 10 weeks for one of 15 to 20 m² (160 to 215 sq ft).
- Wool. Natural wool, washed, spun and in many styles dyed before weaving begins.
- Design density. A plain field with a few lines is quicker to weave than a field full of motifs, color changes and borders. This is why two rugs of the same size can differ a lot in price.
- Finishing. Washing, drying, trimming the pile, finishing the edges and the fringe.
- Getting it to you. International shipping of a heavy parcel, and, depending on the seller, import duties and taxes on arrival.
How TAZRIRT prices a rug
Each made-to-order rug has a rate per square meter, set by its collection. The rate depends on the size band: it eases as rugs get bigger, then rises a little again for very large rugs, above 20 m² (about 215 sq ft). On the product page you enter your width and length, and the page multiplies the area by the rate for that band. There is no separate charge for choosing a custom size.
Tassels are a choice on the same page. Shipping is free, and duties and taxes are included, so the price at checkout is the price you pay.
Real examples (October 2026)
| Rug | Size | List price | With the current 30% code |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beni Ourain style, Boujaad or Zanafi | 5 x 8 ft | $914.17 | $639.92 |
| Beni Ourain style, Boujaad or Zanafi | 8 x 10 ft | $1,701.98 | $1,191.39 |
| Beni Ourain style, Boujaad or Zanafi | 9 x 12 ft | $2,287.64 | $1,601.35 |
| Zanafi flatweave runner | 2 ft 6 in x 10 ft | $629.42 | $440.59 |
| Round rug | 8 ft diameter | $1,379.42 | $965.59 |
| Signature Collection | 5 x 8 ft | $2,069.88 | $1,448.92 |
| Signature Collection | 8 x 10 ft | $4,778.93 | $3,345.25 |
Why is the Signature Collection higher? Its designs are denser: more colors, more motifs, relief carving in some pieces. Each of those adds hours at the loom.

Price per square foot, for comparison
Rug sellers price in very different ways, so the fairest comparison is the cost per square foot (or per m²) for the same size, everything included. Using the table above, after the current code:
- 8 x 10 ft Beni Ourain style: $1,191.39 for 80 sq ft, about $14.90 per sq ft.
- 5 x 8 ft Beni Ourain style: $639.92 for 40 sq ft, about $16.00 per sq ft.
- 8 x 10 ft Signature: $3,345.25 for 80 sq ft, about $41.80 per sq ft.
How to compare two offers
- Same size. Compare 8 x 10 with 8 x 10, not with “from” prices for the smallest size.
- Everything included. Add shipping, and ask whether import duties and taxes will be charged at your door. For a buyer in the United States, a duty bill on arrival can change the comparison.
- Same making. Hand-knotted, handwoven flatweave, hand-tufted and machine-made are four different products. Our guide on how to tell a handmade rug from a machine-made copy helps here.
- Same terms. Weaving time, return policy for made-to-order pieces, what happens if the rug arrives damaged.
Ways to spend less
- Size precisely. Price follows area. A rug 6 in narrower on each side, if the room allows it, costs noticeably less. Our living room size guide shows how to find the right size, not the biggest.
- Choose a simpler design. A Beni Ourain style rug with a few lines costs a fraction of a dense multicolor piece of the same size.
- Consider a flatweave. A Zanafi kilim gives the same Moroccan character with a lighter construction.
