What Size Rug Goes Under a Dining Table?

A rug under a dining table should reach at least 24 in (61 cm) past every edge of the table, so that a chair stays on the rug when someone pulls it out to sit down. For a table seating six, that usually means 8 x 10 ft (244 x 305 cm). For eight, 9 x 12 ft (274 x 366 cm). A round table takes a round rug about 4 to 5 ft (122 to 152 cm) wider than the table.
The 24-inch rule
Every chair at a dining table slides back about 2 ft when someone gets up. If the rug stops short of that point, the back legs drop off its edge, catch, and tip. So the starting point is not the table but the table plus 24 in on all four sides. Some guides use 30 in (76 cm) for wide armchairs. Both are conventions: measure your own chairs pulled out.
The formula is simple:
Rug size for a rectangular table
Rug width = table width + 48 in (122 cm)
Rug length = table length + 48 in (122 cm)
Common table sizes and the rug they need
| Table | Typical size | Rug, at least |
|---|---|---|
| 4 seats | 36 x 48 in (91 x 122 cm) | 7 x 8 ft (213 x 244 cm), or 6 x 9 ft at a squeeze |
| 6 seats | 36 x 72 in (91 x 183 cm) | 7 x 10 ft (213 x 305 cm), usually 8 x 10 ft |
| 8 seats | 40 x 96 in (102 x 244 cm) | 8 x 12 ft (244 x 366 cm), usually 9 x 12 ft |
| 10 seats | 42 x 120 in (107 x 305 cm) | 8 x 14 ft (244 x 427 cm), usually 9 x 14 ft |
Notice that the “at least” sizes are often not standard rug sizes. That is the usual problem with dining rooms: the exact size the table needs falls between two catalog sizes. A rug made to order solves it: you enter, for example, 7 ft 6 in x 10 ft and get exactly that.
Round tables
A round table reads best on a round rug. The same rule applies all the way around: the rug diameter is the table diameter plus 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm).
| Table diameter | Round rug |
|---|---|
| 36 in (91 cm) | 7 ft (213 cm) |
| 42 in (107 cm) | 8 ft (244 cm) |
| 48 in (122 cm) | 8 to 9 ft (244 to 274 cm) |
| 54 in (137 cm) | 9 ft (274 cm) |
| 60 in (152 cm) | 9 to 10 ft (274 to 305 cm) |
A square rug under a round table also works, especially in a square room: use the same size as the round rug would be.

Flatweave or pile under a table?
This is where construction matters most. Chairs are dragged in and out at every meal, and crumbs fall.
- A flatweave is the easiest choice: chairs glide over it, nothing gets lost in a pile, and crumbs come out with a quick vacuum or a shake. Among Moroccan rugs, Zanafi kilims are flatwoven.
- A low pile works too, if the chairs have felt pads.
- A deep pile is the hardest under a dining table: chairs wobble, and food finds its way into it. Keep the deep ivory rugs for the living room and the bedroom.

Color and pattern under a table
Most of a dining rug is seen around the table, between chair legs. A pattern with small repeats, stripes or a strong border shows well there. A large central motif mostly disappears under the table. Darker grounds and mid-tones forgive the occasional spill better than plain ivory.
Quick checks before you order
- Pull every chair out as if to sit, and measure from the table edge to the back legs.
- Leave a band of floor between the rug and the walls, ideally 12 in (30 cm) or more.
- Check sideboards and doors: the rug should not run halfway under a cabinet.
- If the table has an extension leaf, size the rug for the table as it is most often used.
