A colorful Moroccan rug looks best when the rest of the room steps back. Keep walls and large furniture calm, pick one or two colors from the rug and repeat them in small things (a cushion, a vase, a print), and let natural materials such as wood, rattan, linen and clay fill the space between. Treat the rug as the room’s artwork, because it is.

1. Start with a quiet base

The rug is the loudest thing in the room, so the large surfaces should not compete with it. White, cream, warm gray or soft clay walls; a sofa in a solid color; light or mid-tone wood floors. A pink rug with multicolor diamonds can look chaotic next to a patterned sofa and joyful next to a plain linen one.

2. Pull one color out, then stop

Look at the rug and choose one of its secondary colors, not the main one. Repeat it two or three times around the room, at different heights: a cushion on the sofa, a book or a vase on a shelf, a print on the wall. On a navy and mustard rug, the mustard in a throw and a ceramic lamp is enough. More than two echoed colors, and the room starts to feel themed.

3. Mix with natural textures

Handwoven wool sits naturally with other materials made by hand or by nature: oak and walnut, rattan and cane, linen, terracotta pots, brass, plants. These add texture without adding color, and keep a bright rug grounded. A glossy, all-white room can make the same rug feel loud.

4. Choose the pattern by the room’s size

  • Small rooms: a rug with a clear background and spaced-out motifs keeps the room from feeling crowded.
  • Large rooms: color blocks and bold, large-scale shapes hold their own across a big floor.
  • Narrow spaces: stripes and bands along the length of a runner make a hallway feel longer and calmer.

5. Mixing a colorful rug with other patterns

It can be done. The rule is scale: if the rug has large shapes, the cushions and curtains can carry a small, tight pattern, and the other way round. Keep at least one color shared between every pattern in the room.

6. Put it on the wall

A Moroccan rug is a textile, not only a floor covering. A smaller colorful rug hung on a wall, above a bed or a sofa, works as a large piece of art and adds warmth and some sound absorption. Hang it from a wooden batten or a rod with sleeves sewn to the back, so the weight is spread along the top edge, never from nails through the wool.

Which color for which room

Color family Mood Works well in
Pinks and corals Warm, playful, soft Bedrooms, reading corners, nurseries
Yellows and mustards Bright, energetic Kitchens, hallways, north-facing rooms that need light
Blues and indigos Calm, deep Living rooms, studies, bedrooms
Sage and olive greens Natural, restful Living rooms with wood and plants, home offices
Reds and rusts Rich, traditional, warm Dining rooms, libraries, entrances

Before you choose

  • Look at the rug photos in daylight, and at night under your own lamps if you can: warm bulbs push colors toward yellow.
  • Remember that handwoven wool varies slightly from one piece to the next, and that screens differ. If one exact shade matters, ask us before you order.
  • Size first, color second. A beautiful rug that is too small never looks right: see our living room size guide.

Prefer something quieter? Our comparison of Beni Ourain and Boujaad rugs sets the calm ivory style against the colorful one.
