Two round handmade Moroccan wool rugs: one with bold red abstract shapes on ivory, one in ivory with taupe symbols and blue-edged side panels.

Choose a round rug by what stands on it. Under a round dining table, take the table diameter plus 4 to 5 ft (122 to 152 cm). In an entryway, leave at least 12 in (30 cm) of floor around it and make sure the door clears it. Under a chair and side table in a reading corner, 5 to 6 ft (152 to 183 cm) is usually enough. In a living room, a round rug works best under a round coffee table in a small or square room.

Where a round rug works

A round rug softens a room full of straight lines: square rooms, rectangular furniture, a grid of floorboards. It also marks a spot without dividing the room, which is why it suits entrances, corners and the space under a single piece of furniture.

It is a weaker choice under a long sofa, or in a long narrow room, where its shape fights the furniture. There, a rectangle or a runner does the job better.

Round rug sizes by use

Where Diameter How to check

Round dining table, 6 seats 9 to 10 ft (274 to 305 cm) Table diameter plus 48 to 60 in.
Entryway or foyer 4 to 6 ft (122 to 183 cm) 12 in or more of floor around it; the door swings clear.
Reading corner 5 to 6 ft (152 to 183 cm) The chair’s front legs and the side table sit on it.
Under a round coffee table 6 to 8 ft (183 to 244 cm) The front legs of the seats around it reach the rug.
Nursery or play area 5 to 7 ft (152 to 213 cm) Leaves room for a play mat or a chair beside it.
Rounded to the nearest centimeter.

How to measure for a round rug

  1. Find the center of the spot: the center of the table, the middle of the entry, or a point between the chair and its side table.
  2. Tie a string to a pencil, or use a tape measure held at the center, and mark the circle on the floor with painter’s tape at the diameter you are considering.
  3. Pull out chairs, open the doors, walk past it. Adjust by 6 in (15 cm) at a time.
  4. Write down the diameter. That is your rug size.

Round tables, the short rule: rug diameter = table diameter + 48 to 60 in (122 to 152 cm). Our full guide to rugs under a dining table has the table-by-table sizes.

Ordering a round rug in your size

Our round rugs are made to order. On the product page there is a single field, the diameter, in feet and inches, meters or centimeters, and the page shows the price and the estimated delivery for that size. Round rugs are finished without tassels, so the edge stays a clean circle.

The smallest round rug that can be ordered online has an area of 1 m², which puts the smallest diameter at about 3 ft 4 in (1 m). For larger pieces, the page goes well beyond a dining room: you can enter a diameter of 12 ft or more.

Styling a round rug

  • Center it on something. A round rug off center to its table or its corner looks dropped, not placed.
  • Echo the curve once. A round table, a globe pendant, or a round mirror nearby makes the shape feel intended.
  • Let the pattern read. A round rug is often seen whole, from above, as in an entrance. Bold abstract shapes and symbols show their full design there.
